Thailand visa: exemption, eVisa & requirements in 2026

Last reviewed 12 July 2026 · Source: Thai e-Visa (thaievisa.go.th)

Whether you need a visa for Thailand depends entirely on your nationality and how long you stay. Most tourists arrive under the visa exemption scheme, which was extended to 60 days for many passports. Others apply for a tourist eVisa online. Nearly everyone must also file the free Thailand Digital Arrival Card (TDAC) before arrival. This guide untangles which route applies to you.

Frequently asked questions

Do I even need a visa?

Many nationalities do not for stays up to 60 days — they enter under visa exemption. Check the exemption list; if you’re not on it, apply for the eVisa.

What is the TDAC and is it free?

The Thailand Digital Arrival Card is a mandatory, free online form for most arrivals. Complete it only on the official government site — never pay for it.

Can I extend my stay?

Visa-exempt and tourist-visa stays can usually be extended once by 30 days at an immigration office for a fee.

How much is the tourist eVisa?

Typically around 1,000–2,000 THB for single entry, varying by mission and exchange rate.

Can I work on a tourist visa?

No. Tourism entry and tourist visas do not permit employment. Work requires the appropriate visa and permit.
