India eVisa: types, fees & how to apply in 2026
Last reviewed 12 July 2026 · Source: indianvisaonline.gov.inIndia runs one of the world’s largest electronic visa (eVisa) programmes, open to citizens of more than 165 countries. Unlike a single all-purpose document, the Indian eVisa is split into distinct categories — tourist, business, medical, and medical attendant — each with its own validity and fee. This guide explains which type you need, what the official government fee is, and how to apply on the government portal.

India eVisa types
The category you choose must match your purpose of travel. Applying under the wrong type is a common cause of rejection.
- e-Tourist visa — tourism, visiting friends and family, short yoga or recreational courses. Available in 30-day, 1-year and 5-year versions.
- e-Business visa — meetings, trade, sales, recruiting staff. Valid one year, multiple entry, with each stay capped at 180 days.
- e-Medical visa — treatment at a recognised hospital, valid 60 days with triple entry.
- e-Medical Attendant visa — for people accompanying an e-Medical visa holder.
India eVisa fees
The government fee is set in US dollars and varies by category and, for tourist visas, by season — peak months (April–June) cost more than the low season. A small bank transaction charge (around 2.5%) is added at payment. Treat the figures below as the official government fee at review time and confirm the exact amount for your nationality on the portal.
| Visa type | Government fee | Validity |
|---|---|---|
| e-Tourist (30 days) | ~US$25 | 30 days, double entry |
| e-Tourist (1 year) | ~US$40 | 365 days, multiple entry |
| e-Tourist (5 years) | ~US$80 | 5 years, multiple entry |
| e-Business (1 year) | ~US$25 | 365 days, multiple entry |
| e-Medical | ~US$25 | 60 days, triple entry |
The fee is non-refundable, even if the application is refused. On the long-validity tourist visas, individual stays are capped (typically 90 days per visit for most nationalities, 180 days for citizens of the US, UK, Canada and Japan), so the multi-year validity does not mean continuous residence.

Entry points & validity
The India eVisa is valid for arrival at designated international airports (including Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Kolkata, Hyderabad and others) and five seaports. It cannot be used to enter overland at a land border. You may exit from any authorised Immigration Check Post. Your permitted stay is counted from the date of arrival, not the date of issue.
Frequently asked questions
How much does the India eVisa cost?
It depends on the type and, for tourist visas, the season. A 30-day e-Tourist visa is roughly US$25 in peak months, the 1-year about US$40 and the 5-year about US$80, plus a small bank charge. Confirm the current figure for your passport on the official portal.
How far in advance can I apply?
You can apply from 30 days up to four days before your intended arrival. Applying too early or too late in that window will cause problems, so aim for about a week ahead.
Can I use the eVisa at a land border?
No. The eVisa is only valid at designated airports and seaports. Overland entry from Nepal, Bhutan or elsewhere requires a regular visa.
Do children need their own eVisa?
Yes. Every traveller with their own passport, including infants, needs a separate application.
Can I extend or convert an eVisa?
eVisas are generally non-extendable and non-convertible. For longer or different stays, apply for the appropriate regular visa before you travel.
